Hydrogen Powertrains Coming to BMW in 2028

Driving change

BMW has announced plans to introduce hydrogen powertrains to its model lineup by 2028. This strategic move aligns with the automaker's commitment to offering a diverse range of zero-emission options to customers.

The hydrogen fuel cell powertrain technology will be seamlessly integrated into existing BMW models, expanding the brand's portfolio beyond traditional electric, plug-in hybrid, and internal combustion options. This significant development marks a new era for BMW as it becomes one of the first global premium manufacturers to offer a series production fuel cell vehicle.

BMW's collaboration with Toyota has been instrumental in driving this progress. The two companies have been working together for over a decade to develop hydrogen systems and have now taken a major step forward with the joint development of the next-generation powertrain technology.

Oliver Zipse, chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, said: “This is a milestone in automotive history: the first-ever series production fuel cell vehicle to be offered by a global premium manufacturer.

"Powered by hydrogen and driven by the spirit of our cooperation, it will underscore how technological progress is shaping future mobility and it will herald an era of significant demand for fuel cell electric vehicles.”

A successful pilot scheme

The decision to introduce hydrogen powertrains comes after successful testing of the BMW iX5 Hydrogen pilot fleet worldwide. This experience has provided valuable insights and paved the way for the upcoming series production models.

Beyond passenger vehicles, BMW and Toyota recognise the potential of hydrogen in commercial applications. By investing in hydrogen infrastructure and promoting sustainable hydrogen production, the two companies aim to create a comprehensive ecosystem that supports the widespread adoption of hydrogen-powered vehicles.

The BMW and Toyota hydrogen models will each maintain their unique brand identities, ensuring that customers have a variety of options to choose from. This strategic approach reflects the companies' commitment to providing tailored solutions that meet the diverse needs of their customers.

As BMW and Toyota continue to lead the way in hydrogen technology, the future of sustainable mobility looks increasingly promising. With a focus on innovation, collaboration, and infrastructure development, the automotive industry is ready to embrace a new era of clean and efficient transportation.
