Mild Hybrid (MHEV)

Mild Hybrid Vehicles (MHEVs) combine an internal combustion engine with an electric motor for improved efficiency while driving. When the vehicle is at low speeds or stationary, the engine can automatically shut off. A starter-generator seamlessly restarts the engine when needed.

A separate lithium-ion battery recharges itself through regenerative braking during coasting and braking. MHEVs do not require plugging in to an external power source, and still require the driver to fill the car with fuel.

Hybrid (HEV)

Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) build upon the concept of Mild Hybrids (MHEVs) by using a significantly larger battery and a more powerful electric motor. This translates to greater assistance for the internal combustion engine, allowing HEVs to travel short distances at low speeds solely on electric power.

Like MHEVs, HEVs cannot be plugged into an external power source. The batteries recharge through regenerative braking and the engine itself. HEVs achieve significantly higher miles per gallon (mpg) due to their larger battery and electric motor's ability to take over propulsion duties more frequently.

Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV)

Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) combine the functionality of hybrid vehicles with the added advantage of plugging into an external power source to charge their larger battery. This larger battery allows PHEVs to travel up to 30 miles on electric power alone, producing zero emissions.

PHEVs offer the best of both worlds- on longer journeys, the efficient combustion engine takes over, while in city traffic or at low speeds, the electric motor seamlessly switches in for cleaner, quieter driving.
